Random Bookish Update

Sorry for my lack of posting lately! I have only now discovered the many wonderful delights of Skyrim and have been playing it a lot. Between work, Skyrim and exercise I have also been reading Inheritance By: Christopher Paolini. In between that I have been re-watching the Harry Potter movies which makes me want to re-read the books. Oh well, one thing at a time! I hope everyone is doing okay! Read any great  books lately?

Favourite Summer Reads

Even though it is most definitely not summer yet. (Here, anyway.) I was thinking this morning about the books I love to read the most in Summer. I know that my absolute favorite book to read in the summer is The Historian. Which I most assuredly plan on reading again soon. It is one of my favorite books anyway, but there is something about reading it in the hot summer with a cup of really strong coffee that just seems magical to me. Other books I will probably want to read are anything from L.M. Montgomery. The way she describes nature and life in her books is fantastic. Then there are always seafaring stories. I love the sea and one of my biggest dreams is to learn how to sail and eventually get my own sailboat. There you have it, some of my favorite summer reading adventures.

What kind of books do you want to read this summer?

Paper Towns By: John Green

Paper Towns was my first book by John Green. I loved it! The characters were great, the story kept me interested and overall, this was just a great fun read. I am definitely looking forward to reading his other books.

How My Husband’s and My Interests Colided

So a few months ago, my husband began watching a youtube channel called SciShow. During this time, while I was browsing random blogs, I saw people posting about The Fault in Our Stars everywhere. Now for some reason, when I see a book that everyone loves, I stay away from it. That never lasts long. (Ahem, Harry Potter, The Hunger Games) Then more recently my husband began to watch the VlogBrothers. I would always hear it in the background and hey, those guys are pretty cool. I then asked my husband what their names were and he told me they were Hank Green and John Green. It was then that I realized who John Green was. And all of this happened around them time I began NaNoWriMo, which happened around the time my husband saw one of John Green’s Vlogs about NaNoWriMo. It was all very weird timing.  Now you see how our interests collided randomly.

Anyway! Now I am really wanting to read all of his books.

But look! I ordered the box set of his books from Amazon.

Clockwork Princess By: Cassandra Clare

I must say, I did not know at all what to think about this book until I was finished. Then I discovered that I really liked it. This book was confusingly awesome and was definitely an emotional roller coaster. I found myself worrying that I would hate the ending, but it turns out it was pretty great. I recommend this book if you have loved all of Cassandra Clare’s other books.

Side note: If you were worried about buying the hardcover because of the sticker, it actually comes off very easily.

Characters Making Their Own Decisions

When I first started writing my first book, I never really had any idea what to expect. I knew that I had the story outlined in my head and some notes. I knew what my characters were going to be and how they were going to act. Or so I thought! I never realized how little control I can sometimes have over my characters. I think that I know what they will do and then the ideas change as I am writing them. In a way this is awesome, but in another way it makes writing rather confusing at times. I am finding that this is happening in the book I am writing now as well. Overall, I think it makes it a lot more fun to write the unexpected.

Do your characters do what they want?

How Tendinitis Ruined My Camp NaNoWriMo

So there I was, writing happily. And there was the tendinitis, remaining pleasantly dormant. Until today, when it hit me so hard I could barely even hold a cup in my hand. Seeing as how I have to type all day at work, I decided to set Camp NaNoWriMo aside. Does it suck? It really does. But I am sitting here typing with one hand. Yay excuses!

At the very least, I wrote more in 16 days than I have in over a year. I wrote: 27,537. And! I know that I am capable of writing 50,000 words in a month mentally if not physically. I have suffered from severe tendinitis in my left arm and hand for years now, including a bit of nerve damage in my elbow on the same arm. Essentially, according to the doctor, any repetitive movement is bad. And typing is bad. But my job involves typing, so I type! I just need to go to physiotherapy. Which I will do soon, once the pain lessens! Yay whining!

Either way, now you all know my epic fail. My hope is that everyone else participating wins just as epically. Good luck, people!

Music for Dreams

I am rather strange when it comes to music. I like most music that can make me dream. Music that I can write to, music that I can be angry to, music that I can just listen to while thinking. This can include Melodic Metal, Rock, Classical or anything that just happens to sound beautiful to me. I don’t often like any screaming in my music and I don’t usually enjoy rap or poppy beats. Most of my favorite bands are from Finland. (Charon, Sonata Arctica, Entwine, Nightwish).

Music for me is a necessity, I can’t often write without it and I am extremely grateful I get to listen to music at work. It makes me far more productive. Music is one of the main things that brought my husband together in the beginning. We loved (and still do) to share all kinds of music with each other. Then I love music that is soft, melodic and just plain epic sounding. (E.S. Posthumus, Enya, Secret Garden.) These are the best for me to write to.  Especially since I am writing Fantasy.

Then I love my angry music, which is also good to write to in certain situations. Breaking Benjamin is one of my favorites for those moods. Love that band. But, my favorite band will still remain Muse. They are just plain awesome. Essentially, I just love music. It blows my mind.

What is your favorite music?
